This cherry smoothie, featuring banana, lemon, hemp seeds, and soy milk, is rich in flavor and nutrient-dense. Frozen cherries and banana make it sweet and creamy, while freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a vibrant burst of freshness and zing that perfectly balances the sweetness.

Cherries are an excellent source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, especially anthocyanins, which have been shown to reduce oxidative stress. The cherry smoothie is paired with soy milk and hemp seeds for creaminess, along with banana for natural sweetness, while the lemon adds a refreshing twist, making it the best tasting cherry banana smoothie.

To make smoothies creamy and higher in plant protein, I love the combination of soy milk blended with hemp seeds, which adds a nutritional boost and a source of the essential omega-3 and 6 fats. If you prefer, you can use any other plant-based milk, but I find that soy milk provides the best balance of protein and creaminess in this banana cherry smoothie.

Hemp seeds provide the essential omega-3 and 6 fats in the optimal ratio and also contain the essential amino acids. The protein and healthy fats  help to keep you full longer and are one of my go-to smoothie ingredients for supporting inflammation and stable energy levels.

Combined with lemon, which lifts the cherry flavor and brings a subtle brightness, this banana and cherry smoothie feels both indulgent and refreshing at the same time.

The cherry banana smoothie with lemon blends five simple ingredients into a creamy, sweet, and citrusy smoothie that’s perfect for busy mornings or a light afternoon pick-me-up. With antioxidants, plant protein, and healthy fats, it’s a nourishing choice you’ll want to make again and again.

A top down view of the ingredients for a cherry banana smoothie, including a bowl of frozen cherries, a ripe banana, lemon juice, soy milk, and a spoonful of hemp seeds arranged on a light wood surface.

Cherry Banana Smoothie with Lemon

  • 1½ cups frozen cherries
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
  • ½ cup unsweetened soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed – try up to 4 tablespoon for more zing!)

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Tips and Substitutions:

Add an extra tablespoon of lemon juice for more zing and brightness in the cherry lemon smoothie.

Use a ripe banana, but avoid one that is overly ripe, as it can make the smoothie too sweet and impart a strong, ripe banana flavor. I am sure you know your preferred level of ripeness.

For a thicker and slightly icier texture, add one third cup of ice. The ice also helps mellow the sweetness from the cherries and banana.

Fun Fact: Cherries are naturally rich in anthocyanins, which give them their vibrant color and also provide antioxidant support for liver health while helping reduce inflammation. Even though cherries contain natural fructose, research suggests they may actually protect the liver rather than harm it.

Several animal studies have shown that cherries and cherry anthocyanins can help reduce fat buildup in the liver, support healthy blood sugar and insulin levels, and lower oxidative stress, even when consumed alongside a high fat diet. You can read more about the benefits of cherries for liver health in this post.
